Nothing In Biology Makes Sense, Except…

September 10, 2009

That would be the beginning of one of the more famous quotes about evolution spoken in the 21st Century. Theodosius Dobzhansky wrote this in 1973, with the full quote going (in case you’ve never heard or read it before): “Nothing in biology makes sense, except in the light of evolution.” Now it’s important to note that when he wrote this he was actually writing an essay that was defending Theistic Evolution. I won’t go into that here or now, as it involves too much philosophy and suppositioning. I don’t agree with it, but that’s a personal thing, and completely unrelated to my agreeing with the theory of Evolution.

My point is, though, that Biology is such a strange subject, and there are new discoveries and revelations being made daily in this field. We can thank evolution for that. Things like Fanged Frogs, Antibiotics, Swine Flu… All of these things and so much more are all related and explained by evolution.

The point of this blog isn’t to defend or explain evolution. That can be taken care of later, not that it really needs my help. Why I’m writing this is because of the fact that without Evolution, how can anyone explain anything in Biology? How do you explain drug resistance, new strains of a disease, or newly discovered species? How is speciation even explained? That’s my point. Evolution is what holds Biology together and helps everything make sense. And the only people who would attack evolution are those who know nothing of Biology and don’t see how everything would fall apart without it. Basically, they’re arguing from ignorance, usually. I could go on about how that damages the sciences and education in America, but I won’t. At least not now.
